Rajiv Nayyar, World Record holder for batting over 1000 minutes is designated as Director Sports in Emax Group of Institutions here today. This right-handed batsman hit the headlines in November 1999 when he batted for 1015 minutes in scoring 271 for Himachal Pradesh, who he was captaining. It was the longest first-class innings of all time, eclipsing Hanif Mohammad's 970-minute 337 made against West Indies in 1957-58. He compiled 7000 runs in his career. Nayyar hit 20 centuries and 32 half centuries at an average of 44.97 in 96 first class matches. Rajeev hails from District Chamba and played for Una district for 18 years. Despite his creditable performance, Nayyar, did not get a chance to represent India in Test matches or One-day internationals. The year 1999 was a golden year for him as he scored 952 runs in eight matches with an average of 68. He scored four centuries and got second position in batting in India in first class matches. Rajeev is the first Himachal player to have played for Minor County in England for a record time of 10 years. Rajeev Nayyar was instrumental in North Zone victory in Duleep Trophy in 1999. He scored 102 against Central Zone, 92 against Central Zone and 120 against West Zone. Rajeev (105 not out) had a record fifth-wicket partnership for 381 runs with Varinder Sehwag (276) against South Zone.
Rajeev has played for India A against South Africa at Nagpur in 1996. He was a member of India B team in Challenger Trophy the same year. Three years later, he was selected in the Board President's XI against New Zealand in Jaipur.
Addressing the students on very first day Nayyar said that students would benefit from playing sports because it motivates them to perform well in education, encourages important life skills and provides scholarship opportunities. He also said that participating in sports can help a student increase their grades and attendance. He assured students that soon there will be much more sports activities in emax Campus. To promote sports in emax he declared that special marks will be given to students who will show best performances in sports.
Congratulating Nayyar Chairman of Emax Om Prakash Aggarwal said that sports play a vital role in the makeup of a young engineer and manager, especially in the college years where students are much more mature and mentally developed. He said that sports plays an important role in charter building of students and many qualities can be inculcated and developed in young students by involving them in various sports activities.
Rajiv Bansal, Finance Secretary was also present on the occasion. He congratulated the students and said that soon a Cricket Club will be inaugurated in the College. Director General Dr. Baljeet Kapoor said that students who were involved in sports also performs well in academics because sports helps us to learn various qualities like discipline , teamwork, responsibility, self confidence and accountability.
